Summer Lingerers — Perennials

  • Coreopsis – Zagreb, Moonbeam, Sunray, Golden Showers, rosea
  • Achillea – Coronation Gold – needs to be deadheaded for fall bloom
  • Artemesia – Valerie Finnis Powis Castle
  • Rudbeckia – Goldsturm, Herbstonne, various gloriosa daisies
  • Hemerocallis – late blooming daylilies and rebloomers
  • Perovskia – Russian Sage
  • Buddleia – Butterfly Bush – deadheading old blooms will increase fall bloom
  • Hibiscus – Lord and Lady Baltimore, many others
  • Ajuga – Burgundy Glow
  • Astilbe – Sprite, Pumila
  • Asclepias – Butterfly Weed
  • Heuchera – Coral Bells, useful for foliage color

Fall Blooming Perennials

  • Asters – Purple Dome, Woods Pink and Woods Purple, horizontalis
  • Boltonia – Snowbank and Pink Beauty
  • Grasses – any that are hardy for your zone
  • Sedum – Autumn Joy, Ruby Glow, Vera Jameson, sieboldii, Autumn Fire, Matrona
  • Chrysanthemum – tender perennial, appears to overwinter better if planted in the spring but this is no guarantee!
  • Eupatorium – Joe Pye Weed, Gateway
  • Cimicifuga – Fairy Candles, good for moist shade
  • Salidago – Goldenrod does not cause hayfever! Ragweed is the culprit.
  • Anemone – Robustissima, September Charm, Honorine Jobert, Queen Charlotte
  • Helenium – Moorheim Beauty, Kugelsonne, Gartensonne
  • Clematis – Sweet Autumn, Lady Betty Balfour, Ernest Marham, Duchess of Edinburgh, Nelly Moser, c. tangutica

  • Evergreens – work toward 25% of the garden being evergreen plants
  • Oakleaf hydrangea
  • Pee Gee hydrangea
